Chuzhou

Japanese: 滁州 - ちょしゅう

A city in the eastern part of Anhui Province, China. It is also read as "Zhoushu". It is the center of the Chu County area. It is located at the southeastern foot of the Zhangbaling Mountains, and upstream of the Chu River, a tributary of the Yangtze River. It is the entrance to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River from the middle reaches of the Huai River, and is close to the border between Jiangsu and Anhui, making it a strategic location for conquering Nanjing, Yangzhou, and Hefei. It was particularly located in the shoulder and back of Nanjing, and in ancient times it was a key route to attack Wu, one of the three kingdoms. During the rebellion at the end of the Yuan Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang (later Emperor Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty), a soldier of the Red Turban general Guo Zixing, raised his army here, crossed the Yangtze River south, and captured Nanjing, successfully unifying the whole of China.

中国，安徽省東部の市。〈じょしゅう〉とも読む。滁県地区の中心。張八嶺山脈の南東麓，長江(揚子江)の支流である滁河の上流にある。淮河（わいが）中流域より長江下流域をうかがう入口にあたり，また江蘇･安徽の境に近く，南京，揚州，合肥を攻略する要地であった。とくに南京にとっては肩背の位置にあり，古くは三国の呉を討つ要道にあたり，また元末の反乱期には，紅巾軍の将郭子興の兵であった朱元璋(のちの明の洪武帝)がこの地に拠って挙兵し，長江を南渡して南京を陥れ中国全土の統一に成功している。
