[Rise and Fall and Current Situation]
The Society of Jesus marked a new turning point in the history of religious orders, abolishing old lifestyles such as certain monastic robes and singing and praying, and spreading throughout the world. By the time of the death of its founder, Ignatius (1556), the number of members had reached 1,000 and 12 provinces, and during the time of the fifth Superior General, C. Aquaviva (1581-1615), the number had reached 13,112 and 32 provinces, and the Society's apostolic activities, school education, and academic research progressed in countries around the world. However, in the midst of the anti-church storm at the end of the 18th century, the Society was banned and expelled from Portugal (1759), France (1764), Spain, Naples (1767), and other countries.
