... The cholera epidemic of 1831 was the catalyst for the enactment of the Public Health Act in 1848, thanks to the efforts of the physician E. Chadwick, and finally the construction of sewers, waterworks, and other facilities began. Then, between 1860 and 1875, under the direction of the civil engineer Joseph William Bazalgette (1819-1891), a combined sewer system was constructed to collect domestic wastewater, flush toilet wastewater, and rainwater in London. However, because the system collected sewage in a 30km trunk line along both sides of the Thames and then discharged it downstream, the construction of the sewer system spread to the city, causing water pollution downstream and seriously affecting agriculture. ...
