A city in the eastern part of New Mexico, USA. Located on the border with Texas, surrounded by plateaus of over 1,000 meters. Founded in 1906 as a junction of the Santa Fe Railroad. Named after Clovis, King of the Franks. A center of irrigation agriculture and livestock farming. There are livestock markets, feed processing plants, and agricultural produce markets. Eastern New Mexico University (founded in 1934) is located in Port Rail, 31 km south. Population 30,954 (1990).
