Jodelle (English spelling) Étienne Jodelle

French dramatic poet. Born in Paris. At the age of 20, as a student, he performed his own tragedy " Cleopatra the Captive " and comedy " Eugène " (both in 1553) in front of King Henry II, starring himself, and was highly praised as a literary phenomenon for its originality. The former in particular is notable for its noble theme, use of twelve-syllable verse (alexandrin), lyricism, five-act structure, and the rule of three unities, which are the seeds of later classical tragedy. He joined the Pleiade poetic group.

フランスの劇詩人。パリ生まれ。20歳の学生のとき、国王アンリ2世の前で自作の悲劇『囚(とら)われのクレオパトラ』Cléopâtre captiveと喜劇『ウージェーヌ』Eugène（ともに1553）を自ら出演して上演、その新味によって文学的事件として絶賛された。とくに前者は冗長で筋の運びも緩慢ではあるが、高貴な主題、十二音綴(じゅうにおんてつ)詩句（アレクサンドラン）alexandrinの使用、叙情性、五幕構成、三統一の規則（三一致の法則）など、後の古典悲劇の萌芽(ほうが)を含んでいる点で注目される。詩人集団プレイアード詩派に参加した。
