Yusuhara Hachiman Shrine

Japanese: 柞原八幡宮 - ゆすはらはちまんぐう
Yusuhara Hachiman Shrine

It is also called "Isuhara-ji". It is located in Oaza Hachiman, Oita City. It enshrines Emperor Chuai, Emperor Ojin, and Empress Jingu. It is said that in 827 (Tencho 4), a monk from Enryaku-ji Temple felt a revelation of Hachiman-no-Okami on Isuharayama, and built the shrine in 836 (Jowa 3). As the second sacred site of Usa Jingu, it is highly revered by the government and people, and as it is close to the provincial capital of Bungo (Oita Prefecture), it was often revered by successive provincial governors, and was called Bungo Ichinomiya. It was a former small national shrine. Its annual festival is on March 15th, and is also called the Hatsu-U Festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival in mid-September features a Shinto ritual called Hojo-e. The shrine building is painted red and has many sculptures, and is called the Nikko of Eastern Kyushu. The gilt bronze Buddha and swords stored at the shrine are national important cultural properties. The camphor trees around the South Gate are designated as natural monuments. The two volumes of "Yusuhara Hachiman Shrine History" were donated in 1622 (Genwa 8).
