Born: 1546. Strasbourg Died: 1590. Forbach. German author. Germany's greatest popular satirist of the 16th century, also known as a polemicist on the Protestant side. Travelled through Italy, the Netherlands, and England. Earned a degree from the University of Basel, and worked as a lawyer and civil servant. At the same time, he published moral satires that made full use of his humanistic education and linguistic talent, and attacked the Pope and the Society of Jesus in polemics. His representative works include Affentheuerlich Naupengeheuerliche Geschichtsschrift (1575), an adaptation of Rabelais' Gargantua and Pantagruel, and the satirical Das glückhafft Schiff von Zürich (76).
