…It was born as a result of the development of Romanesque art, entered a preparatory period in the mid-12th century, and was established as a distinct style in France and England in the 13th century. It spread throughout Western Europe, and continued to develop and change over the next two centuries, until it was replaced by modern art, represented by Renaissance art that was formed in Italy from the beginning of the 15th century. The name Gothic comes from the fact that Italian Renaissance artists such as Vasari criticized medieval architecture as something brought about by the barbarian Goths, but since the 19th century, it has come to be used as a term in art history to refer to a style of medieval art in Western Europe. It was northern France that gave this medieval art a clear form, as it was called "opus francigenum," but since it is a phenomenon throughout Western Europe, the term "medieval French style" is too narrow. …
