…In 1829, he became professor of mineralogy and physics at the University of Königsberg, where he studied the specific heat of minerals and birefringence in crystals and amorphous materials. In 1831, together with Hermann Franz Moritz Kopp (1817-92), he discovered the Neumann–Kopf law, which states that the molar specific heat of a solid is approximately equal to the sum of the atomic heats (heat capacity per gram of atom) of its component elements.
