Amorous Golden Pill - Koshoku Mankintan
Ukiyo-zoshi. Written by Yasshoku-jibun. 5 volumes. Published in 1694 (Genroku 7). A collection of short erotic tales set in the red-light district of Shinmachi, Osaka. 20 stories. Following the style of Saikaku's Shoen Daikan (84), each story begins with an introduction that quotes ancient events or wise sayings, a central story, and ends with an original punch line. It is a light-hearted tale that was popular at the time, and its light-hearted flavor is the highlight of ukiyo-zoshi after Saikaku. It is unknown who Yasshoku-jibun was, but he also wrote the light-hearted tale Zashiki-banashi (94) and the ukiyo-zoshi Koshoku Haidokusan (1703), which uses storytelling techniques to depict human stupidity.
