A port town on the Ionian Sea in the Syracuse Province of Sicily, in the eastern part of Sicily, in southwest Italy. The surrounding area is fertile agricultural land, with cereal, olive, and grape cultivation thriving. Formerly salt-producing, the town now has soap, cement, and brick industries, and the petrochemical industry is also well developed. Founded by the Romans in 42 BC, it was destroyed by the Saracens and rebuilt by Frederick II. It was destroyed again in an earthquake in 1693.
