Hay - hoshikusa (English spelling) hay

Japanese: 干し草 - ほしくさ（英語表記）hay

It is made by cutting and drying pasture grass or wild plants, and is one of the livestock feeds in winter when there is no green grass. It is also written as hay. It is given to livestock along with silage and bran. Alfalfa, Italian ryegrass, and a mixture of orchard grass and clover are mainly used. The time of harvest varies depending on the type of pasture grass, but it is generally considered best to harvest at the beginning of flowering from the perspective of both quality and yield, in terms of nutritional value and livestock palatability. It is cut with a mower and spread out on the spot to dry, but using a hay conditioner to bruise the stems and leaves is highly effective in promoting evaporation of water.

牧草や野草を刈り取って乾燥したもので，冬季の青草がない時期の家畜の飼料の一つ。乾草とも書く。サイレージやふすまなどとともに家畜に与えられる。アルファルファ，イタリアンライグラスおよびオーチャードグラスとクローバー類の混播（こんぱん）牧草などが主として用いられる。刈取時期は牧草の種類によって異なるが，栄養価や家畜の嗜好（しこう）性などからみた品質と収量の両面から，一般に開花初期がよいとされている。モーアで刈り取り，その場に広げて乾燥するが，ヘーコンディショナーで茎葉に傷をつけると，水分の蒸発を促進させる効果が高い。
