Japanese: 筋肉注射 - きんにくちゅうしゃ（英語表記）Intramuscular injection

A needle is inserted deep into the skin and into the muscle to inject the injection liquid. This method of vaccination is used in many countries. In Japan, there were many cases in the early 1970s where infants and young children developed quadriceps shortening syndrome after receiving antipyretics and antibiotics via intramuscular injection, so there is strong support for caution regarding intramuscular injections, and it is customary to administer vaccinations via subcutaneous injection.

皮膚の奥深く、筋肉まで針を刺して注射液を入れること。ワクチン接種の方法として、多くの国で用いられている。日本では、70年代前半に筋肉注射による解熱剤や抗生物質の投与で、乳幼児が大腿四頭筋短縮症を発症した例が多発したことから、筋肉注射への慎重論が根強くあり、ワクチン接種は皮下注射で行われるのが慣例となっている。
