[Died] February 19, 1972. Bass. A British advocate of documentary film. He studied in the United States and noticed the importance of mass communication. After returning to Japan, he theorized the public relations aspect of film (→PR film). He directed only one film, Drifters (1929), but nurtured many talented people in the field, including Basil Wright, Paul Rosa, Harry Watt, and Arthur Elton. He was involved in the establishment of the National Film Board of Canada and was head of the mass communication and public relations department at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and was a consistent leader in the field.

Grierson
Grierson, Sir George Abraham

Born: January 7, 1851, Glenadary, Dublin
[Died] March 9, 1941. Camberley, Surrey. British linguist. After graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, he went to India and worked as a civil servant while studying languages such as Bihari, Hindi, and Dardic languages, as well as the lives of the local people. In 1898, he was appointed to lead a linguistic survey of the whole of India, a task he carried out for 30 years until 1928. The results of his work, with the help of S. Knoeb of Norway and others, were published as the Linguistic Survey of India (11 volumes, 1903-28).

Grierson, Benjamin Henry

Born July 8, 1826 in Pittsburgh
Died in 1911. Omena, Michigan. United States Army soldier. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and led a cavalry unit from LaGrange, Tennessee to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, from April 17 to May 2, 1863, and contributed to the victory at the Battle of Vicksburg.

イギリスの言語学者。ダブリンのトリニティ・カレッジ卒業後インドに渡り，公務員として勤務するかたわら，ビハール語，ヒンディー語，ダルド諸語などの言語と，住民の生活を研究。 1898年インド全域の言語調査の指揮官に任命され，1928年までの 30年間その仕事にあたった。成果は，ノルウェーの S.クヌーブらの助力もかり，『インド諸語概観』 Linguistic Survey of India (11巻，1903～28) として刊行された。
