Grierson, John

[Died] February 19, 1972. Bass. A British advocate of documentary film. He studied in the United States and noticed the importance of mass communication. After returning to Japan, he theorized the public relations aspect of film (→PR film). He directed only one film, Drifters (1929), but nurtured many talented people in the field, including Basil Wright, Paul Rosa, Harry Watt, and Arthur Elton. He was involved in the establishment of the National Film Board of Canada and was head of the mass communication and public relations department at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and was a consistent leader in the field.

[Died] March 9, 1941. Camberley, Surrey. British linguist. After graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, he went to India and worked as a civil servant while studying languages ​​such as Bihari, Hindi, and Dardic languages, as well as the lives of the local people. In 1898, he was appointed to lead a linguistic survey of the whole of India, a task he carried out for 30 years until 1928. The results of his work, with the help of S. Knoeb of Norway and others, were published as the Linguistic Survey of India (11 volumes, 1903-28).

Died in 1911. Omena, Michigan. United States Army soldier. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and led a cavalry unit from LaGrange, Tennessee to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, from April 17 to May 2, 1863, and contributed to the victory at the Battle of Vicksburg.
