A group of five islands scattered in the Arabian Sea off the southern coast of Oman, covering an area of 72.5 km2. Only the largest island, Haraniya, is inhabited. It belongs to Oman. In Arabic, it is called Juzur Khūrīya Mūrīya. In 1854, Sheikh Said ibn Sultan (1807-56) presented the islands to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, but they were returned in 1967. During its period of occupation, the United Kingdom ruled through the colonial protectorate of Aden, and when Aden became independent in 1967, South Yemen also briefly claimed sovereignty over the five islands, following the British lead.
