Sankt Gallen (English spelling)

Japanese: ザンクト･ガレン（英語表記）Sankt Gallen

The name of the canton (state) and its capital city that make up the Swiss Confederation. The city's population is 72,000 (1996). It developed from a city in front of a monastery founded by the Irish monk Gallus. In 1180, it became an imperial city while retaining the authority of the abbot. In the early 14th century, it allied with other cities in Switzerland and Swabia and gained a large degree of autonomy. Unlike other Swiss cities, it was unable to control rural areas, so it focused on the linen weaving industry and the sale of its products, becoming the economic center of eastern Switzerland.

スイス連邦を構成するカントン(州)およびその州都名。都市人口7万2000(1996)。アイルランドの修道士ガルスの創建した修道院の門前市から発達した。1180年修道院長の諸権限を残したまま帝国都市となる。14世紀初頭スイスやシュワーベン地方の諸都市と同盟し，大幅な自治権を獲得。スイスの他都市と異なって農村領域を支配することができなかったため，亜麻布織工業とその製品販売に力を注ぎ，東スイスの経済的中心地となる。
