…Naturally, a guest of honor was often chosen for the troupe, and it was said that "in the old days, even when a guest wrote a hokku, the guest always wrote the hokku first before greeting the guest," and even in a gathering of regulars, the reciter's feelings were important. The hokku style was perfected during the time of the renga poet Sogi, and hokku anthologies that were only for the appreciation of hokku began to be compiled, starting with Sogi's "Uraba" (completed around 1499) and "Jinensai Hokku" (completed in 1506), compiled by Shohaku after his death. In the early modern period, as the management of haiku circles using publishing organizations progressed, hokku anthologies began to appear that collected and edited verse from a wide range of people, not just from the members of a troupe, but the publication of hokku anthologies by individuals came much later than that of renga anthologies by individuals, and finally became popular in the second half of the 18th century, when renga began to decline. …

…当然ながら一座の主賓格の人を立てることが多く，〈客発句とて昔は必ず客より挨拶第一に発句をなす〉といわれ，常連のみの集いでも発句をよむ者にはその気持が大切とされた。発句の様式が完成したのは連歌師宗祇の時代で，発句のみを鑑賞の対象とした発句集も宗祇自撰の《宇良葉（うらば）》(1499ころ成立)や没後に肖柏が編んだ《自然斎発句》(1506成立)を初めとして編纂されるようになった。近世になって出版機構を利用した俳壇経営が進むと，一座の人々を超えた広範囲の大衆から投句を募って編集する発句撰集が出るようになるが，個人発句集の刊行は個人の連句集よりも遥かに遅れ，連句が衰退しはじめる18世紀後半になって，ようやく盛んになる。…
