Its official name is Culiacán Rosales. It is the capital of the state of Sinaloa in western Mexico. It is located about 650 km northwest of Guadalajara, on the coastal plain at the western foot of the Madre Mountains Occidental, overlooking the Culiacán River. It is an old town founded in 1531, and played an important role as a base for Spanish expeditions in the early colonial period. It is now the commercial and industrial center of an irrigated agricultural region, distributing and processing corn, sugar cane, tobacco, fruits, and vegetables. It is the location of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (1941). It is connected by a major road and railway from the border town of Nogales to Mexico City. Population: 602,114 (1990 estimate).
