To ensure confidentiality in pay-per-view broadcasts, video and audio signals are electrically scrambled using a special device called an encoder. Conversely, descrambling refers to restoring the original signals using a device called a decoder. If a scrambled signal is viewed without a decoder, the screen will appear scrambled. Only those who have signed a reception contract with the broadcasting company can install a decoder and view the signal normally. Scrambling methods range from simple ones that process synchronization signals to prevent the television receiver from synchronizing, to ones that use digital technology to change the order of image signals based on a code.
