1889‐1968 American progressive educator who founded the Winnetka Plan. Born in Chicago, he grew up with progressive education. After graduating from Stanford University, he practiced individualized learning as a teacher in Los Angeles County, and then studied and trained in individualized education methods under FL Burk, president of the State College of Education in San Francisco. In 1919, he became the superintendent of schools in Winnetka, a suburb of Chicago, a position he held for 24 years, implementing a new education system in the public schools that was based on individualized learning and socially creative group activities for students.
