Carlton Wolsey Washburne

1889‐1968
American progressive educator who founded the Winnetka Plan. Born in Chicago, he grew up with progressive education. After graduating from Stanford University, he practiced individualized learning as a teacher in Los Angeles County, and then studied and trained in individualized education methods under FL Burk, president of the State College of Education in San Francisco. In 1919, he became the superintendent of schools in Winnetka, a suburb of Chicago, a position he held for 24 years, implementing a new education system in the public schools that was based on individualized learning and socially creative group activities for students.

〈ウィネトカ･プランWinnetka Plan〉を創始したアメリカの進歩主義教育家。シカゴで生まれ，少年時代を進歩主義教育で育つ。スタンフォード大学卒業後，ロサンゼルス郡で教師として個別学習を実践，さらにサンフランシスコの州立教育大学の学長バークF.L.Burkの下で個別的教育法を研究，訓練した。1919年シカゴ郊外ウィネトカの教育長となり24年間在職，その公立学校で生徒の学習の個別化と社会的創造的集団活動を基調とする新教育を実施した。
