The sword attack and seppuku of Asano Takumi no Kami Naganori, lord of Ako Castle in Banshu, in 1701 (Genroku 14), and the raid by the Ako Roshi in 1702 attracted the interest of the jianghu, and numerous works based on these events filled the kabuki and puppet theater stages. The earliest of these is said to be Higashiyama Eiga Butai, which was adapted to the world of Oguri Hangan and performed at the Edo Yamamura-za in the same month and year as the sword attack, and Akebono Soga Yochi, which was set in the world of the Soga clan and performed at the Edo Nakamura-za immediately after the Roshi's seppuku, but there is no solid evidence for either of these, and their authenticity is unknown. The first kabuki work confirmed to have been performed was Keisei San no Kuruma, written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, in 1703, replacing the second play at the Soun-za in Kyoto. ...
