A dance that originated in the 16th century. Its name comes from the French word courir (to run) and has a light tempo. In the mid-17th century, it became a part of a suite and was divided into two parts: the corrente Italiano and the courante French. The corrente Italiano is in rapid 3/4 or 3/8 time, with a constantly running figure. The courante French is a more refined style than the former, in moderate 3/2 or 6/4 time. It is characterized by frequent time alternations. The difference between the two was clear in Bach's works, but later editors used the name courante for the corrente, causing confusion.
