Born January 18, 1904 in Bristol, England
[Died] November 29, 1986. Davenport, Iowa, United States. British-born American film actor. Real name Archibald Alexander Leach. For many years he was one of Hollywood's most popular leading men. To escape his family's difficulties and poverty, he ran away from home at age 13. He became an acrobat in a traveling troupe and moved to the United States in 1920 to perform in the United States. In 1932 he signed a contract with Paramount Pictures, where management gave him the stage name Cary Grant. In 1941 he adopted this stage name as his real name. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, he established his popularity with romantic comedies and action-adventure films. His Girl Friday (1940) is considered one of the greatest comedies in the history of film. His collaborations with director Alfred Hitchcock were both great successes, producing masterpieces such as To Catch a Thief (1955), in which he and Grace Kelly improvised their acting, and North by Northwest (1959), which could be called his greatest work. He was nominated twice for an Academy Award but did not win, and in 1969 he received an Honorary Academy Award.
