...A general term for artificially launched satellites orbiting the Earth, satellites of other celestial bodies, and interplanetary probes. Usually, satellites orbiting the Earth are simply called artificial satellites, and other interplanetary probes are often called artificial celestial bodies or artificial planets. If a satellite is launched at a speed of more than about 11.2 km/s (second cosmic velocity) on the Earth's surface, it will not orbit the Earth, but will escape the Earth.
