Kunohe [village] - Kunohe

Japanese: 九戸[村] - くのへ
Kunohe [village] - Kunohe
A village in Kunohe County, northern Iwate Prefecture. Population 7,727 (1995). A mountain village in the northern part of the Kitakami Highlands, bordering Ninohe City to the northwest. At the northwestern edge is Orizume-dake (852m), and to the south is a chain of mountains that continue from the Hiraniwa Highlands. The Settsunai River, a tributary of the Niida River, flows north through the center. The main industries are agriculture, mainly rice, leaf tobacco, and dairy farming, but in recent years the production of highland vegetables, apples, walnuts, and other products that take advantage of the region's characteristics has thrived. In particular, the village produces 80% of the walnuts in the prefecture. There is Chokoji Temple, the family temple of the Kunohe clan, who ruled the area in the Middle Ages.
