Edaphosaurus (English spelling)

Edaphosaurus (English spelling)
A primitive reptile belonging to the pelycosaurs that lived in Europe and North America from the late Carboniferous to the early Permian. It was about 3 to 3.5 meters long. The spinous processes of the vertebrae extend long upwards, and the skin spreads out like a sail, using them as support bones. Numerous short, finger-like projections protrude irregularly from the bones that support the sail. The sail is 60 to 90 cm high, and looks like a row of girders on the mast of a sailing ship. It is thought that the function of the sail was probably something like a heat dissipation for thermoregulation. It would also have been able to make its body appear larger to intimidate enemies. Based on the characteristics of the skull and teeth, it is believed to have been a herbivorous animal. The skull is short and low compared to the length of the body. All the teeth are the same shape, conical and blunt, and lined up neatly in a single row on the edge of the jawbone. There was also a group of teeth on the palate.
