The Kunohe Masazane Rebellion

Japanese: 九戸政実の乱 - くのへまさざねのらん

A conflict occurred in Mutsu Province at the end of the 16th century. In March 1591 (Tensho 19), Kunohe Masazane, a member of the family of Nanbu Nobunao, lord of Sannohe Castle, rebelled with Kushibiki Kiyonaga and others. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, upon hearing Nobunao's report from Kyoto, dispatched Gamo Ujisato, Date Masamune, Ishida Mitsunari, and others, with Toyotomi Hidetsugu and Tokugawa Ieyasu as commanders-in-chief and Asano Nagamasa as military inspector. Masazane was surrounded by a large army of 60,000, including troops from Oshu and Uzen, and was tricked into surrendering on September 4th. However, 5,000 castle soldiers were slashed to death, and Masazane and his men were executed by beheading during the escort. Since Nobunao succeeded Nanbu Harumasa in 1580, Nobunao and Masazane had been in a tense relationship.

16世紀末陸奥国に起きた争乱。1591年(天正19)3月，三戸城主南部信直の一族九戸政実が櫛引清長らとともに反した。上洛した信直の報告に接した豊臣秀吉は，豊臣秀次･徳川家康を総大将，浅野長政を軍監として蒲生氏郷･伊達政宗･石田三成以下を派遣した。奥羽諸軍を加え6万ともいう大軍に包囲された政実は，誘降の謀計にかかり9月4日降伏したが，城兵5000はなで斬りにされ，政実らは護送の途中斬罪とされた。これより先1580年南部晴政の跡を信直が継いで以来，信直と政実は緊張関係にあった。
