Lugano - Lugano (English spelling)

A tourist city in the canton of Ticino in south-central Switzerland. With a population of 25,919 (2001), it is the largest in the canton, surpassing the cantonal capital of Bellinzona. Located on the northwestern shore of Lake Lugano, it has a mild climate and excellent views, attracting foreign tourists all year round. Most of the residents speak Italian. The influence of Italian culture can be seen in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo (seen in an ancient document in 818, remodeled in the 13th and 14th centuries), the Church of Santa Maria degli Angioli (founded in 1490), and the townscape.
