An evergreen tree native to South Africa (illustration). It belongs to the Cunoniaceae family and is sometimes cultivated for ornamental purposes. It is a hairless tree that can sometimes reach a height of 15 m. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound leaves consisting of 5 to 7 leaflets, and have large early-falling stipules that protect the new shoots. The small flowers are borne in axillary, cylindrical racemes about 20 cm long, with five petals and ten stamens. The wood is light, water-resistant, and polished to a glossy finish, so it is used for furniture and other purposes. The genus Cunonia is distributed in a disjunct manner, with a dozen or so species found in New Caledonia in the southern hemisphere and one species found in South Africa.
