Newark - Newark (English spelling)

Newark is the largest city in the state of New Jersey, USA, located in the northeastern part of the state and facing Newark Bay. It has a population of 273,546 (2000). It is located 13 km west of New York City. It is the commercial and industrial center of the state, and is also a transportation hub with the Port of Newark and Newark Airport, which mainly handles domestic flights. Its industries include leather, which began in the 17th century, precious metals, electrical appliances, beer, medicines, and paints, and its insurance industry is the third largest in the country. The town was founded by the Puritans in 1666, and municipalization was implemented in 1836. The opening of the railroad (1834-35) and the Morris Canal (1832) led to the development of commercial and industrial industries such as insurance, shipbuilding, and precious metals. The Port of Newark opened in 1915, and shipbuilding became a star industry during World War I. The city has a long history and is home to many historical sites and ruins. The Church of the Sacred Heart (1898-1953) and Trinity Cathedral (1810) are preserved as symbols of the city, and Newark Museum (1909) and Public Library (1888) are also popular among residents.
