Katsuonokanmuri (little sail)

Japanese: カツオノカンムリ(鰹の冠) - カツオノカンムリ（英語表記）little sail

A coelenterate of the family Panuliridae in the class Hydrozoa. It is found widely in warm seas. It is a colonial siphonomedusa with a triangular sail standing on an elliptical horizontal plate with a long diameter of about 5 cm, and many zoons attached to it hang down from the bottom of the plate. The central part of the plate is colorless and translucent, and is divided into many chambers that act as a float. The edges of the plate are thin and a beautiful indigo blue color. The sail is somewhat chitinized, which is thought to facilitate movement on the water surface. The zoonotic group consists of a single macrotrophic body at the center, surrounded by several rows of microtrophic bodies with reproductive bodies attached, and one or two rows of antennae on the outside of that.

ヒドロ虫綱カツオノカンムリ科の腔腸動物。暖海域に広く分布する。群体をつくるクダクラゲ類で，長径5cmほどの楕円形の水平板の上に1枚の三角形の帆部がたち，水平板の下には多数の個虫が付着して垂れ下がっている。水平板の中央部は無色半透明で多くの室に分かれていて浮囊の役目をしている。水平板の縁は薄く，美しい青藍色になる。帆は多少キチン化していて，これによって水面の移動を容易にさせているものと考えられる。個虫群は1個の大栄養体を中心にして，生殖体をつけた小栄養体が外側を数列とりまき，さらにその外側に感触体が1～2列とりまいている。
