Ukiyodoko - Ukiyodoko

Japanese:
Ukiyodoko - Ukiyodoko

A comic book by Shikitei Sanba. Two volumes, five books. Published in 1813 and 1814 (Bunka 10 and 11). Also known as Ryuhatsu Shinwa Ukiyodoko. Like the public bath in the earlier Ukiyoburo, this work is set in a hairdressing salon, a social gathering place for the common people of Edo, and portrays the social life of the various people who gather there, mainly through their conversations, in detail, to portray the social conditions and reality of the lives of the common people. The technique used to ensure laughs is exactly the same as in Ukiyoburo, but this work has more novelistic inevitability in the characters that appear and is more tightly structured. Along with Ukiyoburo, this is one of Sanba's masterpieces of comic books, and although it is thoroughly two-dimensional, its minute and detailed realism shows the technical achievement of Edo literature for the common people. The three stories were written by Ryutei Rijō and published in 1823 (Bunsei 6).
