Eurema hecabe

Japanese: キチョウ(英語表記)Eurema hecabe
Eurema hecabe
Lepidoptera, Pieridae. Forewing length about 24mm. Wings are yellow, with black outer edges on the front and back wings. In the autumn type, the black areas on the front wings are degenerated or absent, but small black spots are developed on the underside. The larvae prefer the silk tree of the legume family, but also eat bush clover and other plants. They overwinter as adults. They occur several times a year, and can be found throughout the year in warm areas. They are commonly found throughout Japan from Honshu southward, but are rare in the northern Tohoku region, and have been collected in southwestern Hokkaido. Outside Japan, they are widely distributed in central and southern Asia, Borneo, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Java, New Guinea, Australia, etc. The Japanese species is called E. h. mandarina . The closely related E. laeta is similar to this species but is smaller, has an angular forewing and a black band on the outer edge with a serrated inner edge. It is found south of Honshu and is widely distributed from Korea, China, southern Asia, India, Taiwan to Australia.
