On July 26, 1965, the country gained independence as a fully sovereign state from the British protectorate, and was admitted to the United Nations in the same year. With the coming into force of the new constitution in November 1968, the sultanate was abolished and a republican government was established. Nasir Ibrahim (1926-) became president and continued to rule dictatorially until he resigned in 1978. His successor, President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom (1939-), implemented reforms aimed at modernization.
