…This code was in force until 757 (Tenpyo Hoji 1), during which time the framework of the Japanese ritsuryo system was formed. It is believed that the model for the Taiho Code, which it inherited, was the Yonghui Code of the Tang Dynasty (established in 650 and enforced the following year). The Taiho Code itself no longer exists today, but the gist of its contents can be learned from the Koki (commentary on the Taiho Code) quoted in the 9th century commentary on codes, the Ryo no Shuge, and from articles in the Shoku Nihongi (Chronicles of Japan) from the period when the Taiho Code was in force. …
