The rate at which atmospheric pressure changes over distance. It is expressed as a vector and has magnitude and direction. It usually refers to the horizontal component. The direction of the pressure gradient is positive from high pressure to low pressure. On a weather chart, winds are strong in areas with large pressure gradients where isobars are densely packed.
