In linguistics, when a morpheme has two or more forms, they are called allomorphs. For example, the morphology of "flower" (hana) is /hana/ when used alone, but /bana/ when used in "hana-ba" (flowers) and "higanbana" (red spider lilies). In English, the plural forms of cats, dogs, and roses are /s/, /z/, and /iz/, which are plural allomorphs. In this way, allomorphs arise depending on the phonetic environment.
