An island in the southwest Pacific Ocean, in the center of the New Hebrides archipelago. Area 915 km2, population 31,000 (1989). It is the capital of the Republic of Vanuatu, Vila (population 26,000, 1993), and is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. The majority of the inhabitants are Melanesian, who are also engaged in agriculture, but there are also many immigrants of Chinese and Vietnamese origin, in addition to those of British and French descent from the former colonial powers, and they are mainly engaged in plantation management and commerce.
