A village in Hita County, western Oita Prefecture. Population 1,687 (1995). Bordering Hita City to the north and Fukuoka Prefecture to the west. Most of the village area is mountainous, over 500m above sea level, with a small amount of cultivated land scattered along the Takase River and Akaishi River, tributaries of the Chikugo River. The main settlement is Ono. In addition to rice and livestock farming, highland vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, and flowering trees are produced. It is known as a producer of Hita cedar. The southern area is home to mountains over 1,000m above sea level, such as Shakagatake, Gongendake, and Togamidake, and is part of the Tsue Mountains Prefectural Natural Park. Oimatsu Tenmangu Shrine in Ono enshrines Sugawara no Michizane and other deities, and its old main hall (built around the late 15th century) has been designated an Important Cultural Property. 大分県西部,日田郡の村。人口1687(1995)。北は日田市,西は福岡県に接する。村域の大部分は標高500m以上の山地で,筑後川の支流高瀬川や赤石川沿いにわずかに耕地が散在する。中心集落は大野。米作や畜産のほか,高冷地野菜,シイタケ,花木の生産が行われる。〈日田杉〉の産地として知られる。南部一帯は釈迦ヶ岳,権現岳,渡神岳など標高1000m以上の山々がそびえ,津江山系県立自然公園に属する。大野にある老松(おいまつ)天満社は菅原道真らを祭神とし,その旧本殿(15世紀後半ころの建築)は重要文化財に指定されている。
