Juncus effusus var. decipiens; rush

Juncus effusus var. decipiens; rush
A perennial plant of the Juncaceae family found in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It grows in wetlands, grows densely on wiry stems that grow horizontally from underground stems, and can reach a height of up to 1m. It produces a spherical flower at the end, and cylindrical sheath-like bracts grow long at the end of the flower, so it appears as if the flower is growing midway up the flower stalk. The leaves degenerate into brown sheaths at the base of the flower stalk. It is cultivated in paddy fields, and when it reaches about 1.5m in length it is harvested and dried for use in weaving tatami mats and flower mats. It is cultivated widely from Hokkaido to Kyushu and Okinawa, but is mostly produced in the Chugoku region, especially Okayama, Hiroshima and Kumamoto prefectures. In the past, the pith was used as a wick, so it is also known as toushinsou (wick grass), and is also called rush.
