Sudan [region] (English spelling)

Japanese: スーダン[地方]（英語表記）Sūdān

The savannah belt in central Africa stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, with a maximum width of 250 km on each side, centered on the 15th parallel north. The name comes from medieval Muslims who called it bilād al-sūdān (Countries of the Blacks). Trade routes connecting the Mediterranean coast and Sudan have been open since prehistoric times, but it was the western region of Sudan that first brought about the Islamization of the Sudanese people, when the Almoravid dynasty destroyed the Kingdom of Ghana in 1076-77, heralding the beginning of the Islamization of western Sudan.

アフリカの中央部，北緯15゜の線を中心に，その南北をそれぞれ最大でも250kmの幅で大西洋から紅海まで帯状に連なるサバンナ地帯。中世のイスラム教徒がビラード･アッスーダーンbilād al‐sūdān(黒人の国々)と呼んだのが，この名の起りである。地中海沿岸とスーダンとを結ぶ通商路は先史時代から開かれていたが，それがスーダンの住民のイスラム化をもたらしたのは，スーダン西部地域が最も早く，ムラービト朝は1076∥77年にガーナ王国を滅ぼして，西スーダンのイスラム化の端緒を開いた。
