Nestorianism was the first Christian sect to be introduced into China. Nestorius was expelled at the Council of Ephesus (431) for his heresy, but his sect later developed in Persia and was brought to Chang'an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty, by Arahon (635). It was originally called Persian Sutra, but eventually came to be called Daqin Jingjiao or Nestorianism (Daqin was the Roman Empire, and Jing means shining), and the name of the church changed from Persian Temple to Daqin Temple. With the protection of the Tang Dynasty, Daqin Temples were built in various places and the sect flourished, but it declined after being caught up in the suppression of Buddhism by Emperor Wuzong in 845, and it recovered somewhat during the Yuan Dynasty, but disappeared from China with the fall of the Yuan Dynasty. The use of Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist terminology in understanding and spreading Christianity can be seen from the inscription on the "Daqin Jingjiao Popular China Stele" (erected in 781 and excavated in 1625 after having been buried underground for a long time) and from the Chinese scriptures discovered in a stone chamber in Dunhuang at the beginning of the 20th century.
