Abbe, Ernst
Born: January 23, 1840 in Eisenach
Died January 14, 1905. Jena. German physicist. Professor of Physics and Mathematics at the University of Jena (1870), Director of the Observatory and Director of the Meteorological Observatory (1878). His main achievements were in the theoretical and technical improvements of optical instruments, especially microscopes, which he began to make in 1866 when he became head of research at Carl Zeiss. He played a pioneering role in the invention of achromatic lenses for microscopes, improvements to illumination devices, and especially in the research of the theory of microscopic imaging and resolution. In 1891, he founded the Carl Zeiss Foundation, which provides grants for research on science and social improvement. He also demonstrated his talent as a manager of Zeiss, restructuring the company by getting employees and university-related people involved in management.
