Smoke jack

...The rotating lanterns that have been around in Japan for a long time use the same principle. The first practical device of this kind was the smoke jack used in medieval Europe, which had a bladed wheel placed inside the chimney of a fireplace. A gear mechanism was attached to the bottom of the bladed wheel, and it was used to turn a grill for grilling meat or to ring a bell.
