Abbe's number

Japanese: アッベ数 - あっべすう(英語表記)Abbe's number
Abbe's number

In isotropic transparent materials such as optical glass, this is a numerical value specific to the material that determines the property (dispersion) of the refractive index changing with the wavelength of light. It is also called the inverse dispersion rate. If the refractive indices of the Fraunhofer lines C (wavelength 656 nanometers), D (589 nanometers), d (587 nanometers), and F (486 nanometers) in the visible light spectrum are n C , n D , n d , and n F , then the Abbe number ν is:
νD = ( nD -1)/ ( nF - nC )
or ν d =( n d -1)/( n F - n C )
The larger the Abbe number, the smaller the dispersion of the refractive index with respect to wavelength. For flint glass, it is 20 to 50, and for crown glass, it is about 55 to 70.

Japanese:

光学ガラスのような等方性の透明物質において、その屈折率が光の波長によって変化する性質(分散)を規定する物質固有の数値。逆分散率ともいう。可視光線のスペクトルのうちフラウンホーファー線のC(波長656ナノメートル)、D(589ナノメートル)、d(587ナノメートル)、F(486ナノメートル)の各線の屈折率をnCnDndnFとすると、アッベ数νは、
  νD=(nD-1)/(nF-nC)
または
  νd=(nd-1)/(nF-nC)
と定義され、アッベ数が大きいほど波長による屈折率の分散は小さい。フリントガラスで20~50、クラウンガラスでは55~70程度である。
