Pollaiuolo, Antonio
[Born] 1429/1430
[Died] 1498
Italian Florentine goldsmith, sculptor, and painter. He was a pupil of Donatello and Castagno, and was also strongly influenced by Baldobinetti. He started out as a goldsmith, later studying bronze sculpture, and began painting with his brother Piero (1443-98) around 1460. His paintings were initially in the style of engraved lines, influenced by Castagno, but around the time he painted the mural "Dancing Nude" at the Gallina Villa, he began to show an interest in human anatomy and ancient art. In his later works "Hercules Fighting Antaeus" (Uffizi Gallery) and "Hercules Fighting the Hydra" (same gallery), he made full use of his deep knowledge of anatomy to realistically depict intense movements and complex poses. He also had the graceful depiction of poses, as in "David" (State Gallery, Berlin), and the refined line technique of "Woman in Profile" (Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Milan). He also often depicted landscapes that were fresh and realistic, as seen in the backgrounds of "The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian" (National Gallery, London) and "Apollo and Daphne" (same museum). In sculpture, he produced naturalistic works such as "Hercules Combating Antaeus" (National Gallery, Bargello), and in Rome, he created the tombs of Pope Sixtus IV and Pope Innocent VIII, with the participation of his brother Piero, which opened up new horizons in the composition of tombstones with their extraordinary diversity of bronze techniques.
