A scholar of Japanese classics and Confucianism in the late Edo period. He used both the names Ryou and Rou. His pen name was Shusei, his common name was Jōsuke (Suke), and his pen name was Riyaya. He was born on March 3, 1761, in Nishibiwajima, Owari Province (Kiyosu City, Aichi Prefecture), and later inherited the Suzuki family name from his grandfather. At the age of 12, he became a disciple of Ichikawa Kakumei, a scholar of Sorai studies. From around the age of 20, he also became interested in Japanese classics, and in 1792 (Kansei 4), at the age of 29, he became a disciple of Motoori Norinaga. In his later years, he became a professor at Meirindō, an Owari domain school, and died on June 6, 1835, at the age of 74. His works on Japanese classics include "A Treatise on the Four Types of Language," which classifies Japanese into four types: "words of body, words of form, words of action, and teni," "Katsugo Danjakufu" (completed around 1803), which organizes the conjugation of conjugated words through disconnected conjugation, and "Koe no Onjou" (Thoughts on the Phonetics of Elegant Language) (1816), which explains language that represents things through sounds. His works on Chinese classics include "Daigaku Sankai" (1803), "A Sankai to the Analects of Confucius" and "Kiega" (1816), as well as "Hiroya Gakukun" (1828), which discusses academic studies. In particular, "Katsugo Dankakufu" was handed down in manuscript form, and ultimately unified the results of Fujitani Nariakira and Motoori Norinaga's research into conjugated language, and influenced the creation of Motoori Haruniwa's "Kotoba no Yachimata."
