… In the first decade of his 50-year reign, rebellions occurred frequently in the northeast and south, but for the next 40 years, political peace continued. In parliament, the Conservative and Liberal parties were treated equally, and the country played a constant mediating role. In 1947, representative government was introduced to democratize the parliament, and in 1950, under pressure from Britain, the Eusebio de Queiroz Law was promulgated, banning the trade of black slaves from Africa, which was completely abolished within a few years. This marked the start of the imperial period from 1951 to 1963, and Brazil made remarkable progress toward becoming a modern nation. …
