A vassal of the early Kamakura period. Son of Kagekazu. Commonly known as Katoji. Said to be a descendant of Fujiwara Toshihito or Noin Hoshi. Originally lived in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture), but moved with his father to Izu Province (eastern Shizuoka Prefecture). When Minamoto no Yoritomo raised an army in 1180 (Jisho 4), he first served as Yoritomo's personal guard, and then took the head of Yamaki Kanetaka. He continued to achieve military success and was given the position of land steward of Asaba Manor in Totomi Province (west Shizuoka Prefecture) and Toyama Manor in Mino Province (southern Gifu Prefecture), but in 1200 (Shoji 2), he was implicated in the rebellion of Kajiwara Kagetoki and had his territory confiscated. In 1219 (Jokyu 1), after the death of Minamoto no Sanetomo, he became a monk and took the name Kakurenbo Myoho. He died on August 3, 1281.
