Japanese: 出版学 - しゅっぱんがく（英語表記）publishing studies

A field of study that aims to scientifically study and investigate publishing as a social and cultural phenomenon. As a study of communication it is similar to journalism, but it does not necessarily focus only on publishing as mass media. Research on publishing has traditionally included bibliography, book science, library science, reading studies, and typography, but this field integrates these and seeks to elucidate the functions, processes, and effects of publishing from a historical and realistic perspective, with the cooperation of related sciences. The main media that are the subject of research are, of course, printed media such as books and magazines, but it also includes publications that existed before printing, and the scope of the subject matter is expanding further due to developments in communication technology.

社会的，文化的現象としての出版を科学的に研究，調査することをめざす学問。コミュニケーションの学として新聞学に類似性をもつが，必ずしもマス･メディアとしての出版だけが対象ではない。出版に関する研究としては従来，書誌学，書物学，図書館学，読書学，印刷学などがあるが，それらを総合し，隣接諸科学の協力を得ながら，出版の機能，過程，効果などについて，史的および現実的視点から解明しようとしている。研究対象となっているおもなメディアは，もちろん書籍，雑誌等の印刷媒体であるが，印刷以前の出版物を含む一方，コミュニケーション技術の発展により，対象領域はさらに拡大しつつある。
